The people of Newtown were ecstatic to see a new beauty and wellness centre open up in the area. The Ivy Wellness & Beauty Salon is a one-stop shop for relaxation, rejuvenation and beautification! Emma Fraher Power is the salon owner and a beauty therapist herself. Having been born into the beauty industry, as her mother was also a salon owner, Emma found her natural talent for the beauty business, and so it is no surprise that she is now the proud and highly successful owner of The Ivy Wellness & Beauty Salon!
What attracted you to the industry?
From a young age I was interested in beauty. I never wished or looked at another career. My mother had her own hair salon when I was growing up, so my extra time was spent playing in her salon, followed by working there as I grew up. I was involved in the salon buzz from the very start!
How did you get to where you are today?
With a lot of ambition and determination and with my life motto of:
Feel the fear and do it anyway.
Nothing scares me. I’ve always felt that life consists of a bigger picture. If you don’t succeed, no problem. No one died, just move on.
What do you love most about what you do?
I absolutely love my job! I love building not just clients but building friendships, and I can honestly say it’s my favourite part.
What’s the most difficult part of what you do?
I can do my job with my eyes closed, but I’m not an natural business woman. It’s hard to juggle people’s exhortations, and keep all the paperwork up to scratch.
What’s the best piece of style advice you’ve ever received?
If something looks great on you, buy it in every colour!
What’s the best piece of style advice you can pass on?
Real beauty comes from speaking positively to yourself. Women say some horrible things internally to themselves, e.g I’m fat, ugly, a terrible mother etc. If we start saying positive stuff to ourselves, our minds will react.
Who is your style icon and why?
I love Holly Willoughby! She’s classical, yet trendy, and a sense of humour makes anything you wear look good.
Who is your business icon and why?
Without it sounding corny, but my mother. She left school at 14 and opened up her own business at 17 against everyone’s belief that she would run a business, as she was dyslexic. She ended up with a very successful business and it’s because of her I believe anything is possible with passion and determination.
What plans do you have for your business over the next 12 months?
My plans are to hire more amazing therapists, as we are growing from strength to strength, concentrate on putting The Ivy on the map and, of course, to bring home the Hi Style Award for the Best Beauty Salon in Munster and Waterford!
Where do you see yourself in five years?
I would love to enhance our wellness centre, hold retreats, and possibly live out my secret dream… All will be revealed!
How do you stay motivated?
I stay motivated by trying to be the best role model to my children. To stay grounded and level headed but also I’m following a dream for a person that never got a chance to follow his. It’s the best way to stay motivated.
What advice would you give young people who want to break into the industry?
Make sure you have a compassionate nature. It might seem all glamourous but at the end of the day you end up been someone’s counsellor. So, without a sensitive nature you are in the wrong business.
