Everything was rosy in Dublin’s National Botanic Gardens recently for former Miss World, Rosanna Davison, and GAA commentator, Joe Brolly, as they sounded a ‘purple alert’ for Cystic Fibrosis Ireland’s annual fundraising appeal, 65 Roses Day, taking place in April.
The trend-setting ambassadors for Cystic Fibrosis Ireland are urging the people of Ireland to “get their purple on”, when volunteers take to the streets and shopping centres of Ireland selling purple roses to raise funds for vital cystic fibrosis (CF) services.
People can support Cystic Fibrosis Ireland’s 65 Roses Day on Friday April 13 by:
- Buying a purple rose for €2 or donating online at 65rosesday.ie.
- Completing a 65 Roses Challenge – for details, visit 65rosesday.ie.
- Texting 65ROSES to 50300 to donate €2.
Text costs €2. Cystic Fibrosis Ireland will receive a minimum of €1.80. Service Provider: LIKE CHARITY. Helpline: 076 680 5278.
Schools and companies are being especially encouraged to get behind 65 Roses Day by selling purple roses or organising their own 65 Roses Challenges, such as baking 65 cakes, cycling 65 kilometres, or swimming 65 lengths of a pool.
Most Severe Types of CF
Ireland has the highest incidence of CF per head of population and some of the most severe types of the condition in the world. Almost all of Cystic Fibrosis Ireland’s funding comes from public donations and organisers are hoping to raise more than €100,000 for vital CF services in 2018. Services funded include, the development of new CF units around the country, incorporating in-patient, day care and out-patient facilities; specialist CF multi-disciplinary posts in hospitals; patient support grants and medical and scientific research.
For devoted follower-of-fashion Rosanna Davison, the purple rose will never go out of vogue
“I’ve been keeping an eye on the catwalks of late and I can definitely confirm that purple is the new black! Cystic Fibrosis Ireland’s 65 Roses Day is an extremely worthwhile cause and one I really believe in. Ireland has a higher incidence of cystic fibrosis than anywhere else in the world and we must do everything that we can do to help make people’s lives a little bit easier. So, this 65 Roses Day, by showing your purple colours and wearing a purple rose, not only will you be up-to-the-minute in the fashion stakes, but you will also be supporting a really worthwhile cause.”
For passionate cystic fibrosis campaigner Joe Brolly, it is vital to keep our eye on the ball when it comes to supporting people with CF
“Ireland is the capital of the world for cystic fibrosis, with the condition impacting the lives of more than 1,200 people in this country. Indeed, 65 Roses Day gets its name from the way children with this condition are taught to say the words cystic fibrosis, as they have to learn to live with it from a very early age. It’s a condition that can be very isolating, as people have to take extreme precautions to shield themselves from infection.
“With your help, we can make an enormous difference to their lives. Why not rise to the occasion of a 65 Roses Challenge, or donate online at 65rosesday.ie or help turn the country purple and buy a purple rose for €2 on 65 Roses Day? This 65 Roses Day, let’s show people that they are not alone – let’s show them some purple love.”
