Anner Beauty is a one-stop-online-shop for all your beauty needs. Their aim is to bring you the best beauty products, new brands and offer expert advice. But who is the woman behind the expert advice and fabulously curated products? We sat down with founder, Sally O’Brien, to find out.

What attracted you to the industry?

Growing up I always loved make-up. I would always be taking my Mam’s beauty products. I love the idea of make-up and how it can transform you or make you feel better. It’s not a mask to hind behind. it’s a confidence booster. There is such a choice in cosmetics. There is literally something for everyone, which I love!

How did you get to where you are today?

I trained to be a beauty and body therapist in Cork and then went on to work in beauty salons. When the recession hit, beauty salons slowed down, so I worked in retail, which led to working for wedding and event companies but I knew I wanted to get back to the beauty industry, so I set up in July, 2017.

What do you love most about what you do?

Selling beauty products is so exciting! I love meeting people who are genuinely excited about a new eyeshadow palette or lip gloss! Make-up, like I said, is a confidence booster and it’s exciting to buy new products, so I love to sell them. Being a qualified beauty therapist, I know I can advise customers also, which I think is important, as I have the knowledge and expertise in the industry to help them with skin concerns or whatever the beauty dilemma might be.

What’s the most difficult part of what you do?

Online selling can be hard. You don’t actually meet your customer; it can be lonely. As I don’t have a marketing background, I’m still learning ways of how to get the name out there and let people know my business exists.

What’s the best piece of style advice you’ve ever received?

Keep it simple! I think sometimes less is more. Don’t go overboard with accessories or have too many colours going on. It’s the
same with make-up. If you’re going with a bright lip, then pair back on the blush and eyes.

What’s the best piece of style advice you can pass on?

The same: keep it simple and buy clever.

IMG_0502Who is your style icon and why?

Pippa O’Connor and Victoria Beckham. They never seem to get it wrong and always look good!

Who is your business icon and why?

I love women in business. I find them the most inspiring, so people like Lucy Nagle, Marissa Carter – Woman who took a risk!

What plans do you have for your business over the next 12 months?

Expand the brands we have and hopefully add some international brands. More pop-up shops and events. We always want to keep things exciting and be up-to-date with the latest brands and products.

IMG_0504Where do you see yourself in five years?

Oh god who knows; healthy and happy, that’s a start! Hopefully the business will be growing to the level I want it to.

How do you stay motivated?

Knowing I am doing something I love and I took a risk in doing it, as all people who set up a business will know. It’s a huge risk but if you dream big and work hard there’s always a chance of reaching your goals.

What advice would you give young people who want to break into the industry?

The beauty industry has changed so much over the years. Salons have suffered but I think freelance make-up artists are thriving, so pick a part of the industry that you are skilled in and focus on that. I think beauty bloggers have changed the industry also – certainly the retail side of things – so focus on what makes you stand out from everyone else.
