June O’Rourke started her career out in hairstyling, always having a passion for making women look and feel beautiful. Now a successful business owner, this stylish lady co-owns Halo Boutique, a fashion haven in Midleton, where she continues to use her business and style expertise to spread that beautiful feeling among every woman who walks through her door.
What attracted you to the industry?
I always had a great interest for style and fashion for as long as I can remember; hair especially. No one was safe!
How did you get to where you are today?
I started an apprenticeship with Peter Mark at age 16 in which I learned so much and gained a lot of experience in customer relations and really knowing what women want. At the age of 21 I decided to open my own hair salon, which I ran successfully for 10 years. My children came along then, so hung the scissors up for few years to focus on my family.
I always dreamt of opening my own boutique one day. It was always another passion of mine to dress women and make them feel good. In doing this I needed a partner in crime; Sarah was the one! Couldn’t ask for a better business partner. We have the same vision and drive. So, we went for it and just grabbed the bull by horns.
What do you love most about what you do?
I love coming to work everyday. Each day is different; meeting new people, listening to their stories and most off all, to make them feel good in their own skin.
What’s the most difficult part of what you do?
The hardest thing about my job is I suppose juggling home life with work life. I’m a mother to four children, so that can be challenging at times but they actually motivate me too! I hope they look up to me and will have the same hard work ethic and ambition that I have.
What’s the best piece of style advice you can pass on?
If I was to give any style advice it would be don’t follow the crowd, stand out from the crowd!
What plans do you have for your business over the next 12 months?
Going forward for the months, ahead we will continue to keep the bar high and set standards. We take such pride in what we have achieved so far and I think this is testament to our hard work and love for the business.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
In five years we hope to be well established and just keep going from strength to strength. Who knows what’s around the corner?
How do you stay motivated?
My children and family keep me motivated. They have always been so supportive of me and I’m always up for a challenge. My moto is you only live once, so just go for it; nothing ventured nothing gained.
What advice would you give young people who want to break into the industry?
I would say to people who are thinking of starting their own business just go with your instincts and your gut. Just go for it and don’t listen to negativity; that’s what I did. Life is too short!
