Sleep is one of most important processes the body goes through each night and is fundamental for overall health and wellbeing.  Although much research has been done on sleep there is still a lot we don’t know. What we do know however, is that sleep refreshes the mind and body, allows for cells to renew and is essential for the immune system. Lack of sleep also ages us more rapidly and affects our ability to give our day our all.

.All of us can have a sleepless night from time to time or just a ‘bad night’s sleep’ but what happens if you consistently can’t sleep? Holistic sleep therapist, Deirdre O’ Connor says, “consistent broken or bad sleep is actually very dangerous to a person’s overall health, it can create physical, emotional and psychological problems. It’s vital to get to the root of the sleep problem and not let it get out of hand.”

Deirdre has teamed up with the PREM Group owned, four star, Cahernane House Hotel in Killarney, Co. Kerry in order to create ‘The Sleep Coach Package’ which runs on the 15-17th of November. The 2-night/3-day sleep package has been designed by Deirdre and the team at Cahernane House Hotel  to incorporate practical tips and effective interventions to optimise sleep.  The Sleep Coach Package is priced at €320 per person and includes two nights bed and breakfast, dinner on both evenings, yoga and practical sleep tips for guests in search of their elusive 40- winks. The package is a beautiful cross-pollination of stillness, somatic movement, restful yoga, mindfulness and deep-muscle unwinding bringing you back to a quieter place to ready you for deep, restful and nourishing sleep.

The weekend starts on the evening of Friday, 15th of November and begins with bed-time yoga and yoga nidra, the ultimate relaxation technique for releasing stress and tension held in your body.  The following morning, after breakfast Deirdre will give a one-hour presentation on sleep where she will give practical tips on how to switch from ‘wired and tired’ to relaxed and sleepy’. Later that evening a relaxing session using a therapeutic massage balls will see guests learning how to target stress points and eradicate tension in the neck, shoulders, hips and jaws.

Dinner on both evenings will include ingredients well known for their sleep conducive properties with the meal on the first night served in the newly renovated Cellar Bar. On the second evening guests will enjoy a pre-dinner drink before being served a five-course meal in the stunning 2 AA Rosette, Herbert Restaurant.

The weekend wraps up with Somatic Brain Retraining which involves, slow, mindful neuro-sensory movements helping the person to retrain the mind from an agitated ‘fight or flight’ mode into a ‘rest and digest’ state of being.  Rise and Shine Yoga after breakfast on the final day will rejuvenate the body and prepare the guests for their journey home.

Deirdre O’Connor has been practising yoga and deep relaxation methods for over 25 years. She spent time in the Bihar School of Yoga in India and then trained in meditation and Buddhist Philosophy whilst living in Tibetan Buddhist monasteries. She furthered her studies with a series of three-month retreats under the guidance of teachers of the Dalai Lama.

Cahernane House Hotel in Killarney is the perfect place for people to experience true relaxation and peace. Set on the edge of Killarney National Park and lakes the historic country house enjoys a tranquil location yet is just a twenty-minute walk into Killarney town itself.  Built in 1877 the property has been extensively renovated by the owners, PREM Group who have spent over €7.8 million on an ambitious renewal programme.  There are 12 bedrooms in the original Manor House, 28 in the Garden Wing and the former Coach House, once home to the horses and carriages of the Herbert family who built the house is now the setting for 8 new luxurious bedrooms and where guests on the Sleep Coach package will stay.

The modest stone cut Coach House building looks the same on the outside as it always did, however, inside a different scene awaits. Each bedroom contains feature wallpapers, luxurious fabrics and original Irish antique furniture. Some of the bathrooms have free-standing claw foot baths while others feature huge walk-in rain showers and handmade tiles.  The décor of each of the 8 rooms was inspired by nature and pays homage to the native Kerry flora and fauna. Situated away from the main house, the Coach House embraces the quietness and tranquillity of the surrounding landscape.  Beds are from the 7th Heaven range, and at night, before guests retire for the evening the bedrooms are misted with the soothing aromas of patchouli, eucalyptus and ho wood from the Elemis Spa range.

Cahernane House Hotel exudes a sense of relaxation and peace where guests can retreat from the hectic pace of life. Nature surrounds the property and guests will be amazed to see wild deer grazing freely in the fields around the gardens and waterfowl flying above. At night the only sounds you might hear is the distant call of a lone stag or cattle in the surrounding farmland.

The renovations at Cahernane House Hotel are just one of the large capital projects being carried out by PREM Group, who also operate more than 38 properties throughout Ireland, Belgium, the Netherlands, and the UK. The group recently finished renovating and extending some of its other properties including The Hoban Hotel, Co. Kilkenny, Tulfarris Hotel and Golf Resort, Co. Wicklow and The Osprey Hotel in Co. Kildare.

The property is a member of Ireland’s Blue Book and the prestigious Condé Nast Johannsen’s Traveler Guide. The hotel also won an International Gold Award of Excellence for the best 4-star hotel in Ireland from CIE Tours International in January of this year.
