We have cruised into the era of the creative entreprenuer, where success is less about having all the answers and more about the questions being asked. Curiosity is what facilitates the ability and willingness to explore, take part and experience new paths. Passion fuels business ideas and today we chat to Mira Massih, female entrepreneur and founder of Baby Boosa.
Tell us a bit about you?
Whilst on maternity leave and during lockdown, I worked on creating a new small business. I founded Baby Boosa, which aims to redefine baby and toddler products through sustainability, style and thoughtful design. I’ve also been a dentist for over 12 years, and I am so passionate about both my business and my dental career. I have a baby girl who is 10 months old and a boy, a cheeky little toddler who is almost 3.
Tell us about your business?
Baby Boosa was born out of both my life-long dream to try and create something fashion related, as well as the insight I had gained as a new mum. I knew I wanted to do something with babies back in 2018 after my son was born and started to develop something, but the timing wasn’t right to keep going. As soon as I found out I was pregnant with my second, I went straight into idea mode again. My little boy cut his finger on a plastic bib that had broken (and was also only available in not so trendy colours) so project leopard print bib, stylish and sustainable weaning essentials began!
We used to say to our little boy, give the baby (my pregnant belly which he was totally obsessed with at the time) a “boo-sah” and he would kiss my belly, this means ‘kiss’ in Arabic’ and the name was born.
Who has been your biggest inspiration in growing your business?
My children have been my biggest inspiration, they inspire me to create products they would love to use and that I would love to see them in too and I am so excited to involve them in the business. My parents are also a massive inspiration having moved from Egypt decades ago with nothing, they really inspire me to work hard. My father has worked in healthcare in maternity wards his whole career so I could not be happier to start a business with a mission to support mums on this journey too.
What do you love most about having your own business?
What I absolutely love is thinking up a design or idea and just being able to run with it. There is nothing quite like seeing your own product come to life after months of hard work and planning!
What has been the most significant thing you have done to grow your business?
The most significant thing I have done to grow the business is find something I am so passionate about, so that even though I work every single evening and spare a minute to get the business off the ground and running, it does not feel like a chore. It took me a long time to decide the unique idea and the reasons why but once this was clear, I just went for it, which took about 2 years of planning!
What is your number 1 tip for anyone struggling to overcome entrepreneurial overwhelm and keep going?
Please let me know! Having launched the business just 9 months ago, entrepreneurial overwhelm is definitely a thing! Right now, the love I have for the business and the ideas I have for new products and designs just keeps me going!
