The gut is the most fundamental wellbeing organ of the entire body, and the health and wellbeing benefits of looking after our digestive system cannot be underestimated, according to nutritional therapist, Claire O’Brien.

The health practitioner was speaking at the launch of her 2022 gut health wellbeing programmes, Honest & Goodness, which help with the myriad of physical and psychological problems associated with nutrition and digestion.

Digestive problems like constipation or diarrhoea, food allergies, skin conditions, hormonal imbalances, UTIs, thrush and weight issues can all be traced to diet and food issues, as well as autoimmune conditions like fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue.

Scientific evidence also indicates that general wellbeing issues including low mood, anxiety and poor concentration can be due to a gut brain connection that affects mood.  95% of the ‘feel-good hormone’, serotonin, is produced in the gut, the holistic nutritionist explains.

Both online and in-person appointments can be scheduled for either of Claire O’Brien’s Cork or Dublin clinics, with more detail on her website, www.honestgoodness.ie.

Some people just need practical guidance and reassurance, while more complex chronic illness can demand testing and a bespoke monitored nutrition programme, she says.

“Nutritional therapy is suitable to alleviate specific symptoms, as well as improve overall health and mood.   With the help of a therapist, people can identify the foods that make them look and feel their best, while also doing away with embarrassing and upsetting gut issues”.

Recipes, meal plans and advice on portions, fluid intake and meal timing can simply regulate most digestive issues, with many people currently seeking care for stressed digestive systems, following the customary festive overindulgence.

Imbalanced gut flora is a widespread problem in the western world that is often due to incorrect use of antibiotics, Claire O’Brien explains.

“Imbalanced gut bacteria can impair the body’s ability to absorb nutrients, regulate blood sugar and store fat.  Most medical disciplines accept that many illnesses and diseases, physical and neurological, start in the gut.  My work with clients examines the gut / brain connection, with a treatment regime often covering nutrition, mindset, relaxation and breath work”.

Women’s health challenges like perimenopause, testosterone balance, insomnia and other menopause issues can be alleviated by focussing on a diet that promotes a balanced gut, too.

The Honest & Goodness website has more information on the various courses and what they help to achieve.  Employee Wellbeing Programmes are also available, on-site or online, for groups of ten or more.
