After your swim, wash it all out. The combination of soaking your hair with clean water first and then the leave-in conditioner means less chlorine will be absorbed by your hair. .
The Saviour Universal Balm, £9.95 – best to protect face from chlorine and saltwater.
The key to creating the perfect regime to protect your hair from chlorine:
- Prep – get your hair thoroughly soaked with clean water before you get into the chlorinated (or for that matter saltwater) environment.
- Protect your hair with a layer of plant oil-rich conditioner. Those plant oils create a barrier that will help keep the chlorine in the pool and not in your hair
- Clean – whether you’re clarifying or just using your normal shampoo, it’s important to wash away the chlorine as soon as possible.
- Replenish – chlorine and all the extra washing we swimmers do dries hair out. It’s washing away the natural oils your scalp produces to protect hair. So make sure you’re putting plenty back in. Regular masking, leave in conditioners, stylers that are treatments, and co-washing are all great steps to replenish lost moisture, enhance the hair’s barrier and even keep your scalp from drying out.
