Clodagh Thompson has built a remarkable career in global communications, currently serving as the Global Communications Manager at PepsiCo. With over 14 years of experience, she has become a leader in corporate storytelling, brand building, and strategic communication. Last year, she took home the ‘Communications Guru’ award at the Women of Vision Awards, and this year, she’s a finalist once again.
Finding Her Voice in Communications
“What initially drew me to the world of communications was the power of storytelling and its ability to connect people. I have always been fascinated by how effectively crafted messages can influence perceptions, inspire action, and build relationships,” Clodagh reflects.
Over the years, she has learned that authenticity and consistency are the cornerstones of a strong brand. “In an era where information spreads rapidly and audiences are more discerning than ever, it’s crucial for brands to stay true to their values and communicate transparently. Building trust requires consistent messaging across all channels and a genuine commitment to the brand’s mission and values.”
Building a Culture of Wellbeing
Clodagh is also a passionate advocate for mental health and wellbeing. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she co-created PepsiCo’s HowAREyouDoing? program, recognising the need for more robust support for employees. “I wanted to ensure our colleagues had access to the resources and support they needed to navigate these challenging times. The initiative has become a valued part of our culture, evolving to include training for Mental Health First Aiders and earning recognition from the HSE’s Psyched Workplace.”
Innovation and Collaboration
Her innovative spirit extends beyond communications. In 2023, Clodagh was part of the finalist team in PepsiCo’s global Next Big Idea innovation program. “Being part of the finalist team was an incredible experience. It taught me the importance of collaboration and the power of diverse perspectives in driving innovation. Working with a team from different backgrounds and regions reinforced the value of creativity and new ideas.”
Staying Grounded and Inspired
With a demanding role, Clodagh knows the importance of finding balance. “Creating boundaries between work and personal life is essential. I make it a point to set clear limits on my work hours and ensure that I have dedicated time for myself and my loved ones. It’s all about finding a balance that works for me.”
She also finds inspiration in unlikely places, like listening to podcasts on topics she knows nothing about. “It broadens my perspective and sparks creativity. It’s amazing how a simple podcast can shift my mindset and provide fresh insights that I can apply both personally and professionally.”
Outside of work, Clodagh finds joy in nature and the arts. “Some of my passions that help me unwind include being in nature, like hiking, beach yoga, and sailing. I also enjoy acting in both film and theatre in Cork – it allows me to play and explore different worlds.”
Advice for the Next Generation
For those starting out in communications, Clodagh’s advice is clear: “Stay curious and continuously seek to learn and grow. Embrace new technologies and trends, but always stay true to the core principles of effective communication – clarity, authenticity, and empathy. Building strong relationships and networking are also crucial. Don’t be afraid to take risks and think outside the box – innovation often comes from challenging the status quo.”
Proudly Cork-Based
Living and working in Cork has had a profound influence on Clodagh’s journey. “The strong sense of community and the collaborative spirit here have been incredibly supportive. Cork’s vibrant culture and beautiful surroundings provide a great environment for both work and leisure.”
As she continues to lead with purpose, Clodagh remains a powerful voice for change, both within her industry and her community.
