According to TikTok, the way people paint their nails says more about them than their taste in acrylics – it’s a way to signal their relationship status and evoke feelings of confidence, even if it’s done completely unintentionally.
There a couple of colour theories circling Tik Tok at the moment so lets break them down!
The “red nail theory,” a term coined by TikTok creator Robyn Delmonte, @GirlBossTown, has become a viral sensation. The idea is simple: If you wear red nail polish, you’re more likely to receive attention from potential suitors. In her video, Delmonte said that every time she has red nails, a guy comments on the colour. She was confused at first — until it hit her.
“In the ’90s when we were growing up, women had red nails a lot, especially like our moms,” she said in the video. “And I weirdly think guys are attracted to red nails because it reminds them of their moms when they were growing up taking care of them.”
On the other hand, the “Black Nail Theory” centres around the confidence of women, emphasizing the feeling of allure and sexiness. The theory proposes that black nails carry a distinctive power to radiate a sultry and captivating “dark feminine” energy, enabling the wearer to stand out and create a lasting impression in any situation.
Finally, TikTokers have also noticed that single people – particularly newly single people – are more likely to paint their nails white. There’s also a theory that people who wear blue nail polish tend to be in a relationship, because when you ask a man what colour you should paint your nails, they usually go with blue.
