Finding Purpose Through Unexpected Paths with Bille-Jean Bell

From a young age, I imagined my future in veterinary care. That dream, however, shifted dramatically in 2011 when I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease. What should have been an exciting chapter of Secondary School was instead spent in and out of hospitals, in constant pain and figuring out treatment plans. By the time I finished school, I was far too unwell to pursue Veterinary Studies. My plans dissolved, and uncertainty took their place.

During a year of recovery, an unexpected source of inspiration changed everything: my nail technician. She noticed my curiosity about her craft and encouraged me to try a course. In 2014, I completed a Manicure and Pedicure course, followed soon after by my ITEC Nail Technician Diploma. I had no idea then that this small step would redirect the course of my life.

But life wasn’t finished testing me. Not long after qualifying, my health plummeted, and I underwent major surgery to remove my bowel – leaving me with my lifelong companion, my colostomy bag, affectionately named Zoe. When I regained my strength, I returned to the world of nails, working in a popular salon for two years and gaining invaluable hands-on experience.

In 2017, I took a leap and launched my own business. Since then, I’ve immersed myself in continued education – refresher courses, nail art, salon trends, new shapes, advanced techniques, training with top professionals across Ireland and Europe. With each year, my passion grew not only for the craft but for empowering others.

That passion led me to teaching. The moment I began lecturing, I knew I had discovered another calling. Watching women gain confidence, refine their skills, and go on to open their own salons or join elite teams has been one of the greatest honours of my career. I teach them how to deliver beautiful, long-lasting services efficiently, 45 to 60 minutes per client, without ever compromising quality. Their success feels like my own.

In 2027, Nails by Bille-Jean will celebrate its 10 year anniversary. It’s hard to believe how quickly time has passed. Many of my clients from 2014 are still with me today, and my gratitude for their loyalty is immeasurable.

Looking forward, my dreams continue to grow. I hope to bring together my three lifelong loves, nails, animals, and teaching by opening a unique salon offering nail services, dog grooming and training courses under one roof.

Here’s to resilience, reinvention, and a future filled with creativity and purpose. Cheers to the next chapter!
