Mediskin is our Clinic of the Month for July and I recently took a trip there for some treatments and to chat all about skin with Geraldine Jones. While I was there i had some skin treatments and I promised an honest review. Skin Formulas was developed by Geraldine , an accomplished and well-respected aesthetician and skin clinic owner. Geraldine’s vision was to create a range of salon-quality products for clients to use at home; a clear programme, personalised to their skin type and concerns that would give them the results they wanted. A range that would give everyone a skincare routine that was beautiful and simple to use and developed with the most advanced active ingredients. Easy to follow, the routine layers each product to address the needs of the skin and achieve ultimate skin health. Built with the salon experience in mind, the range combines carefully sourced active ingredients with the holistic benefits of essential oils to transform the skin and delight the senses. The range has been incredibly well received by professionals and individuals alike and is available from Salons, stores and online at www.skinformulas.ie.  I will write  separate piece about the brand and my product picks at a later date  but for now here is the treatment review.

Like a lot of other people, I only started really worrying about sun damage, redness and all of the ageing concerns around 10 years ago. Needless to say, as a fair-complexioned woman, I’ve suffered through my fair share of sunburns—many so bad, I blistered. I did a lot of sunbathing in my early twenties, including tanning beds.  Did I regret it? Yes, completely. Could I do anything about it? Well, only kind of. Diligence with SPF was a start and the use of some Vitamin C and retinoids.I have kept my skin out of the sun since my early thirties on holidays. I love skincare and how transformative it is, but the salon or clinic experience is something that isn’t easily replicated at home. I was recently diagnosed with mild Rosacea too.

Geraldine recommended a trio of treatments. Firstly I did a lactic acid peel. Not at all as scary as it sounds, this professional peel by Skinformulas is a superb one for all skin types. Lactic acid is specifically used to treat hyperpigmentation, age spots, and other factors that contribute to a dull and uneven complexion. Other benefits of lactic acid include improved skin tone and reduced pore appearance.Because it is milder ,it makes a lactic acid peel a better choice for sensitive skin. It takes away dull skin with no downtime and no scrubbing. Before the treatment itself, your face is cleansed to remove make-up and impurities from the skin. It feels a little tingly when it’s applied and your skin is slightly flushed after. I found it to be a comfortable experience overall and it is perfect as a stand alone or part of a treatment trio.

I also tried an IPL treatment (which stands for Intense Pulsed Light) that helps reverse the signs of sun damage on a cosmetic level at Mediskin. IPL is just as the name states: An intense, visible, broad-spectrum light that heats and destroys brown spots, melasma, broken capillaries, and sun spots. It was first approved by the FDA in the mid-nineties and has been growing in popularity ever since. A favourite of derms and skin experts, it really helps with a lot of skin problems. The actual treatment feels like a rubber band is snapping against your skin, it is less painful than facial threading or waxing though. You can be a bit red after but the glow is incredible.   It helps with collagen and also with getting rid of pigmentation ( this requires a few sessions to see big results). One of the things that Geraldine did also was help with the improvement of some vascularity( red veins) in my face.  The pigmented spots in my skin did also darken briefly but now are lighter.

Lastly, I had an LED mask. LED therapy (or light-emitting diode therapy to give it its official name) was first used by Nasa to speed up wound healing in astronauts. The Dermalux LED unit that is used by Mediskin is studded with tiny bulbs, which emit light energy at different wavelengths to improve skin health. Red LED lights, for example, can minimise the signs of ageing by stimulating new collagen production. Meanwhile, blue LED light can kill acne-provoking bacteria, yellow can reduce redness, and green targets and diffuses pigmentation. Obviously post peel and IPL I had a lovely calming treatment. The good news is that anyone is a good candidate for the treatment. The treatment time is 20 minutes and the glowing skin results are visible instantly, however it is also great as a one-off and incorporated into facial treatments. Afterwards, I definitely had more of a glow about my skin – but it was the next day that I saw the real results. My skin was smoother, more even-toned and just looked generally better, and I skipped foundation for the rest of the week just stuck to a tinted moisturiser and blush. My skin is still seeing benefits and consistency with this kind of treatment is essential. When I left the clinic I was wearing just serum and SPF by Skinformulas.
