Inflammaging may seem like a new skincare buzz word, but the concept was coined by a French professor in 2000 and is rooted in science. In the 24 years that have passed since its discovery, we now we know so much more about how our diet and lifestyle – including wintery weather changes – can contribute to inflammation in the skin.

What is inflammaging?

“Inflammaging is an increase in inflammation, which can accelerate ageing”, explains Dr Raquel Amado. “You might start to notice your complexion becoming more red, rough, irritated, or even more blemish-prone, and these signs mean you’re experiencing an excess of inflammation – your body’s immune response to external aggressors.”

“Inflammaging also impairs the skin barrier’s ability to function optimally, which can allow other aggressors like bacteria and free radicals to have a more substantial effect. This can exacerbate brown spots, fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin.”

Many skin conditions have their roots in the inflammatory response, which can be exacerbated by our way of life.

“Inflammaging is the body’s natural immune response to external aggressors, including cold weather, pollution, poor sleep, alcohol, a diet reliant on refined starches and sugar, and stress”, says Dr Raquel. “These factors can reduce collagen production and inhibit the skin cells’ ability to renew and repair themselves. You might start to see changes in your skin during times when you’re stressed, eating badly or feeling the effects of cold weather.”

Winter is our favourite time to indulge in rich foods, and perhaps stay up a little too late at the Christmas party – all things which could increase our risk of inflammaging. It’s time to balance things out with some skincare self-care.

You can curtail the effects of inflammaging by promoting cell renewal, protecting your skin against environmental aggressors and preserving your skin’s barrier”, says Dr Raquel.

Ultimate Boost Serum

The rejuvenating, hydrating boosting serum boosts radiance and rejuvenation. It contains Sodium Hyaluronate and LMWHA, which work synergistically by binding water up to 1,000 times to skin cells, providing comprehensive hydration and repairing the skin both internally and externally.

“Ultimate Boost Serum deeply hydrates the skin, replenishing moisture levels for intense and lasting multi-level hydration, helping to plump and smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, whilst restoring the skin’s natural moisture barrier”, says Dr Raquel Amado.

AluminEye®

The rejuvinating and brightening eye cream provides essential hydration to the delicate skin around the eyes, firming and illuminating the delicate under eye area. It contains Glutathione, which boosts environmental defence for more supple and resilient skin.

“AluminEye® targets the most common concerns around the eye area, including fine lines and wrinkles, dark circles and puffiness”, says Dr Raquel.

MicroDerm Polish

The invigorating exfoliating scrub revitalises the skin. It contains Hydrated Silica and Jojoba Esters, which exfoliate cellular debris and promote cell renewal to minimise signs of ageing and uneven skin tone.

Grapefruit Peel Oil and Glycerin energise and deep-clean the skin, preserving the skin barrier during exfoliation whilst hydrating and balancing the skin.

“MicroDerm Polish is a great at-home treatment to unveil skin luminosity and provide a potent mechanical action, all without the risk of scratching the delicate microbiome of the skin”, says Dr Raquel.
