YSL Beauty announced that its new hybrid makeup and skincare range, Nu, has received Cradle to Cradle Certified® Silver. As the most ambitious and actionable global standard for products that enable a healthy, equitable and sustainable future, this is the first time that a line of made-in-France beauty products has received this rigorous certification. Additionally, this important recognition reflects the brand’s values when it comes to sustainability and its long-standing commitment to developing products in a way that limits their impact on the environment, from the design stage to manufacturing through to the end of the product’s life. Through its ongoing commitment to its sustainable practices, the brand aims to achieve Gold-level certification in the coming years.

Cradle to Cradle Certification: The World’s Most Advanced, Science-Based

Measure of Sustainable Products

At YSL Beauty, sustainability is a top priority. The brand is committed to developing product lines like Nu, which meet the needs of consumers who consider their health and the environment in their decision-making. Cradle to Cradle Certified® is a multi-attribute measure of sustainable products; the globally recognized certification assesses all aspects of product design and manufacturing and signals that the brand has taken the extra steps to uphold the highest standard for sustainability. Developed by the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute, the evaluation criteria for this designation are material health, material reutilization, renewable energy and carbon management, water stewardship and social fairness. Unlike many of the single-attribute certifications available, the Cradle to Cradle Certification ladders back up to YSL Beauty’s company mission and reflects multiple factors that influence both product development and purchasing decisions.

Caroline Nègre, International Scientific Director, YSL Beauté, says, “This certification is a meaningful testament to the values of good corporate citizenship that have long been at the heart of YSL Beauty and that inform all of our product development. We believe that sustainability requires depth and breadth of commitment. Today, we welcome the Cradle to Cradle Certification as proof of our ongoing effort to implement responsible business practices, while continuing to build and strengthen trust with our consumers.”

Monica Becker, Director, Beauty, Personal Care and Household Products, Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute, adds, “YSL Beauty’s Nu range reflects innovation, safety and responsibility that we prioritize in our certification process. This responsible approach to product development will have a direct positive impact on the world we will inhabit tomorrow.”

Introducing Nu — a New Era for YSL Beauty

Launched in the US this past September, Nu is an authentic, expressive, and inclusive new generation of sustainable beauty products created with and for Gen Z consumers. This innovative makeup and skincare range features ingredients from natural origins, formulated with both key dermatological and key natural ingredients. Specifically, each Nu product contains at least one ingredient sourced sustainably from YSL Beauty’s Ourika Community Gardens in Morocco, a social engagement with a community of women in Morocco’s Atlas Mountains. The range features 20 flexible shades providing low to medium coverage, each created with L’Oréal Research’s “Color Intelligence Study” of over 3000 multicultural consumers and makeup artists, from 7 countries worldwide, using spectrophotometers to measure skin both with and without makeup. To meet the product circularity criteria in the certification standard, all of the formulas’ raw materials are sourced to be both renewable and biodegradable, allowing them to safely return to the biological cycle. Moreover, the brand has ensured the health and safety of all stakeholders involved in the production of the range, from raw material extraction to when the products leave the final manufacturing facility.

The Nu range, which is manufactured in France using 100% renewable energy, benefits from consciously designed packaging and includes five signature products designed to deliver an all-day-long fresh complexion.

  • The Bare Look Tint (€32.00), an ultra-buildable tint with brightening efficacy thanks to its 90% skincare base enriched with Hyaluronic Acid to hydrate deeply and marshmallow, known for its soothing and brightening properties.*
