“Wearing sunscreen every day is one of the most important ways to keep skin healthy. I recommend everyone – regardless of skin type, tone, or texture – wear sunscreen every day, all year-round. Numerous research studies have demonstrated that wearing sunscreen can minimize short and long-term damage to the skin from the sun’s rays.” Dr Nkem Ugonabo, NYC based, Board-Certified Dermatologist
THE 3 REAL IMPACTS OF SUN EXPOSURE ON SKIN
- The Risk of Skin Cancer
- According to the Melanoma Research Alliance, over 90% of all skin cancer is caused by exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun or indoor tanning devises.5
- Experiencing 5 or more blistering sunburns between the age of 15 and 20 increased once’s melanoma risk by 80%.6
- Sun damage in childhood is of the leading factors of skin cancer development in adulthood. 6
- Damage to the Skin Barrier
A clinical study commissioned by L’Oréal and released in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology3 found that daily sun exposure not only damages the skin cell’s surface morphology but also significantly reduces the level of ceramide4 in the skin and impairs the quality of essential ceramides 1, 3 and 6-II in the skin barrier.
“Sun exposure on unprotected skin can have a negative impact on the skin barrier leading to increased irritation, peeling, sensitivity and inflammation. Sun exposure is associated with increased risk of skin cancer, as well as premature aging (such as wrinkles and sun spots).
