• Bamboo

Bambusa arundinacea, a variety of bamboo found throughout India, is a fast-growing type of reed with a tall, hollow stem. The substance that forms in drops on the nodes of stems is known as “bamboo tears” or «tabashir» in India. It is very rich in silica and used in traditional medicine for its beneficial action on the joints and its toning and fortifying properties. Bamboo tears extract is commonly used to help promote firmer skin. Bamboo tears can also be dried and ground into a powder which has mattifying properties when the particles are fine and an exfoliating action when the particles are large. This powder is also used in make-up products to help enhance wear.

• Safflower

Carthamus tinctorius is grown almost everywhere across the world and has always been known for its many uses. Its flowers contain colouring pigments (red carthamin) which were used to dye the robes of Buddhist monks and Chinese silk. The oil from its seeds, rich in polyunsaturated acids, is known for its nourishing benefits. In cosmetics, safflower extract helps to intensify a tan.

• Blue lotus

Every morning, the Nymphaea caerulea emerges from its calm waters, offering up the enchanting spectacle of its blue-petalled, gold-centered flowers, before disappearing back into the water every night. For the Ancient Egyptians, the aquatic “rebirth” cycle of this spectacular flower – which they regarded as a representation of the sun in the sky – gave the blue lotus a divine dimension. While considered a sacred plant, its flowers were also used to make wine and tea and its leaves, roots and seeds were eaten as a vegetable. In traditional medicine, the blue lotus was used to calm a troubled mind. In cosmetics, blue lotus is used for the wax obtained from its flower which has nourishing and tightening properties.

• Aloe vera

Today widely cultivated in tropical regions, aloe vera can be dated back to the time of the ancient Egyptians. It is said that Cleopatra attributed the secret of her legendary beauty to the plant. Research carried out on the gel from the inner leaf has revealed the presence of softening, moisturizing and regenerating compounds. Thanks to its high content of compound sugars (polysaccharides) which encourage water retention in the epidermis, organic aloe vera is appreciated for its moisturizing and soothing properties.

• Coconut

The Cocos nucifera is the well-travelled fruit of the coconut tree, an elegant palm from hot regions of the world. It is believed to have originated in South Asia before colonizing the tropical coastlands of Africa, America and Oceania thanks to its ability to float for days and still retain its capacity to germinate. The coconut tree is one of the oldest known “useful” plants. Its wood is used in construction and its sap is used in a refreshing drink. Just its fruit alone, the coconut, is a very complete food with its sweet, white nourishing flesh and deliciously refreshing, slightly milky water. Organic coconut water helps to encourage the supply of nutrients essential for the skin which helps boost radiance. Traditionally, the oil extracted from its pulp, called copra, is recognized for its nourishing and protective benefits.

• White horehound

It’s been said that no cough can resist the Marrubium vulgare… and from Antiquity to the present day, this plant has continued to demonstrate its powerful benefits in the treatment of respiratory ailments. While we have used it as a medicinal remedy for centuries, the white horehound only recently revealed its role in the rehabilitation of degraded and contaminated soils. On the ruins, debris and wasteland where the plant thrives, its interactions with the earth help remove pollution from the soil. In cosmetics, organic white horehound extract helps the skin fight the harmful effects of pollution.

• Nipplewort

Lapsana communis is a widespread annual plant that flowers from June to September and prefers semi-shade conditions. It is an easy-growing plant and can even be found on the edge of motorways. It has long been used to cure scabies and soothe breast irritation caused by breastfeeding (hence its name). In cosmetics, nipplewort extract, which has anti-free radical properties, helps stimulate the skin’s natural defenses against environmental aggressions.

• Furcellaria

Furcellaria lumbricalis is a common red seaweed found along the North Atlantic coast which likes the light. It favours the area of foreshore which is exposed at low tide when it reveals its beautiful reddish-brown dense foliage. A water-soluble gum is extracted from the furcellaria which is used in the food industry for its thickening, gelling and stabilizing properties. In cosmetics, furcellaria extract helps protect skin from dehydration when exposed to pollution.
