Over 60% of Adults in Ireland are living with obesity. Thérapie Health launch end to end GLP-1 programme in Ireland as a safe weight loss solution

Thérapie Health launches with doctor-led weight loss programme, aimed at making GLP-1 injections more accessible in a medically managed programme for those who meet the correct criteria. GLP-1’s such as Wegovy, Ozempic and Mounjaro have become increasingly popular in recent months. However, a lack of education and access to weight loss injections has led to a surge in unregulated products on the Irish black market, which may pose serious health risks. The Thérapie Health Weight Management Clinic will provide the public with an opportunity to learn about these medications through its doctor-led programme and offer a safe, affordable, and accessible alternative.
According to the HSE, Ireland has one of the highest levels of obesity in Europe, with 60% of adults living with the disease. Obesity is associated with other chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, several types of cancer, pain and musculoskeletal disorders. The Thérapie Health programme focuses on health gain by combating obesity-related illnesses, through a medically guided weight loss programme for lasting results.
Those eligible for the programme need to meet specific guidelines. People who are suitable for GLP-1 medication include:
  • Adults over 18 years old with a BMI over 30
  • Adults over 18 years old with a BMI over 27 and at least one other weight-related condition such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, pre-diabetes, sleep apnoea, or a history of heart attack, stroke or blood vessel disease
The programme is led by Thérapie Health Clinical Director Professor Suzanne Norris, a consultant hepatologist and gastroenterologist and a professor in gastroenterology and hepatology at Trinity College Dublin. The programme has specific eligibility criteria for patients and includes continuous medical monitoring.
The three step process includes:
  • Online Consultation: Prospective patients complete an online form to determine their eligibility. If the criteria is met, they are invited to attend a clinical assessment.
  • Clinical Assessment: At the first appointment, a member of the Thérapie Health medical team will provide a health screening including blood tests, blood pressure check and BMI measurement.
  • Personalised Wegovy Plan: Following an in-depth review by a Thérapie doctor, patients will return for a follow-up consultation to discuss the results in detail. If treatment is appropriate, the doctor will recommend a tailored plan and issue a GLP-1 prescription in the clinic. The patient is continuously monitored throughout their journey to health gain with regularly scheduled check-ins via phone and in person.

Professor Suzanne Norris, Clinical Director at Thérapie Health, says “This is an exciting time in the health industry with the advent of GLP-1 medications and the incredible health gain possibilities they offer. I have been working with the team at Thérapie on the best approach to launching this programme and we have developed a clinically managed, protocol-driven, guideline-based programme that will ensure that the weight management programme will be available to those who fulfil the criteria.
While weight loss is always going to be topical, it’s important to remember that we’re not offering a service for people who want to lose a little weight before going on holidays, rather we are aiming to help people live fuller, healthier lives by avoiding some of the long-term complications associated with obesity and excess weight. Heart conditions, liver problems, the risk of developing diabetes and more are prevalent issues for those living with obesity.
Additionally, for those who are overweight and struggling to live healthier; by losing excess weight they can reduce the risk of cancer. GLP-1 injections help to reduce appetite and help with what many people living with obesity call ‘food noise’, the niggling desire to eat when already full. When delivered through a managed programme, the medication can be truly lifechanging. The Thérapie Health programme is helping people live healthier, longer lives.”
Phillip McGlade, CEO of Thérapie Group, says “The decision to launch Thérapie Health was an easy one when we looked at the statistics surrounding obesity in Ireland and the rising engagement in black market products, which can be so dangerous. According to the HPRA over 430 websites selling weight loss linked medicines were shut down in 2024, and over 1400 products of a similar nature were seized in Ireland.
Across the board, the mission at Thérapie Medical Group has always been to create accessibility to life enhancing treatments, whether that be affordable laser eye and cataract surgery with Optilase, fertility solutions with Thérapie Fertility or doctor led aesthetic treatments with Thérapie Clinic, we create viable opportunities for people to improve their lives. Thérapie Health is the first step in our progression into the longevity market, helping people to live longer, fuller lives. The programme that has been created with Professor Norris is focused on delivering safe, weight loss solutions that help people live better.”
Thérapie Health is a new subsidiary of Thérapie Medical Group which includes Thérapie Clinic, Europe’s number one aesthetic clinic, Optilase, Ireland’s leading experts in laser eye and cataract surgery and Thérapie Fertility, Ireland’s most affordable and accessible fertility clinic.
