A new national survey by The Shona Project, in partnership with The Outcome, has uncovered the complex realities facing teenage girls in Ireland today. The findings, based on responses from over 1,000 girls aged 12 to 19, reveal a generation caught between resilience and anxiety, hope and self-doubt.
Key Findings:
- 67% say their school environment is not a safe or welcoming space for all
- 89% carry anxiety or worry that no one knows about
- 79% sometimes feel “no good at all”
- 80% believe their generation faces more challenges than those before
- 70% feel social media negatively impacts their mental health
The survey, conducted between October and December 2024, highlights the urgent need for better mental health support, safer learning environments, and more inclusive policies that truly reflect the voices of young women.
The Shona Project’s founder, Tammy Darcy, says the survey is a wake-up call:
“These stories matter. They reflect the challenges, fears, and ambitions of a generation growing up in an uncertain world. It’s our job to ensure they are heard and that their needs are at the heart of decision-making.”
This data will be used to push for policy changes in areas like education, mental health, and equality – ensuring young voices help shape the future of Ireland.
